WHAT TEACHERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE LAZY BRAIN
- The brain is an incredible organ
- But it is lazy
- To cope with all the data & information it is defaulted to act quickly and efficiently
- Often getting things wrong
- Making common errors in judgment
- Known as cognitive biases
- Taking shortcuts along the way
- These shortcuts are determined by four basic principle decisions
- What should I remember?
- What to do with too much information?
- What to do when there is not enough meaning?
- What to do when we have to act fast?
WHAT TEACHERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE BIASES OF THE BRAIN
- What should I remember?
- Memories are stored differently based on how it was experienced
- Events and lists are reduced to their basic elements
- Detail may be ignored in return for generalities
- Memories are edited and reinforced after the fact
- What to do with too much information?
- We notice things the brain has memories of
- Bizarre, funny visual things stand out
- Change is immediately recognized
- Our own beliefs inform the things we are drawn to
- Flaws in others are recognized more easily than flaws in oneself
- What to do when there is not enough meaning?
- Simple things are favored over more complex and complicated things
- Irreversible decisions are avoided – keeping options opened
- Tasks of self interests are completed
- To focus the brain favor the things in front of us which relates
- The brain likes to act if it is confident it can make an impact
- What to do when we have to act fast?
- Search for patterns and stories even if data is little
- We use stereotypes, prior knowledge, generalities to fill in characteristics
- People remind us as better based on familiarity and our fondness of them
- To make numbers easier we simplify them
- The big mistake we do is thinking that we know what others are thinking
- Our current belief impact on past and future actions
